Chicago (2002) is a musical black comedy crime film directed by Rob Marshall in his feature debut. Adapted from the 1975 stage musical, which itself was based on a 1926 play, the film explores themes of celebrity, scandal, and corruption in 1920s Chicago. It stars Renée Zellweger as Roxie Hart, a housewife and aspiring performer who murders her lover, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian who killed her husband and sister. Both women find themselves on death row, vying for the attention of the slick lawyer Billy Flynn (Richard Gere) to escape execution. The film features standout performances, elaborate musical numbers, and a satirical take on the justice system and media sensationalism. It won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Zeta-Jones.
